A Day In The Life Of An Ambulance Driver: So I'm At An EMT Class The Other Day…

  • Gary · 1 year ago
We used to have an EMT with only one arm. A birth defect left her with an arm that stopped just below her elbow. She passed out pretty tough PAT test first time through. < />< />Whenever some new guy would whine about how hard something was, I'd just point to Kelly and say, "She can do it, why can't you?" < />< />She left us because she got into medical school. < />< />The only limitation on what you can do is what you THINK you can do.

Bet your EMT felt rather sheepish....< />< />On a side note, way to go KatyBeth! Gotta love that preemie fight. Both our boys have it too and I swear they have more moxy than if they had been born full term and not gone through 1/10th of the things in their lives.

I used to work with an EMT-B with neuropathic weakness in both hands. He couldn't grip anything (including an ambu-bag). He didn't do any PT or whatnot, but did remark (frequently) that "women shouldn't be EMTs because they can't lift".< />< />I wish he had been in your class.< />< />As an aside, he was eventually reassigned to dispatch because of his narcolepsy.

I'm thinking, cute? Yes, but...< />< />Precious? Yes, but...< />< />Inspiring? Oh yes!!< />< />Uh, Ted? He went to dispatcher because of narcolepsy? The weak link to the head of the chain? Well, easy to find, I guess.

Nobody would work with him...he couldn't lift, had poor hygiene, lied about vital signs, and fell asleep while driving. Management was afraid to fire him because of supposed Americans with Disabilities Act protection (don't know if that would have held water).< />< />Based on what I've read here, I'd much rather have worked with KatyBeth or even Sprite.

Ted, < />I've known two men with Narcolepsy.< />One of them was my Daddy. He also had sleep apnea. What a bitch, huh? Fall asleep and stop breathin', the ultimate bad joke combo!< />But Daddy took some sort of anti-convulsant med for his Narcolepsy. His neurologist said it is a type of seizure disorder and was connected to his sleep apnea. Once they found the correct dosage, he didn't have any problems w/the narcolepsy. He did still have the Sleep Apnea, of course, but a CPAP cut down on the daytime sleepiness from that. < />< />I think your guy was just a butt-head from your description. And the narcolepsy, unless it was documented by an M.D., was bogus.

Yay for KatyBeth!< />< />Reminds me of when my mom used to teach Red Cross first aid and CPR classes, and I used to be there to help lay out and set up the manikins and such. She's cooler, though!

HAHA That is awesome. < />I bet none of your students will ever forget that either. < />---< />< />There is a volunteer driver where I work who can't lift so there always has to be a third person on with her to do the lifting. She was complaining to one of the supervisors that she didn't want to work with another female (me) because of "Lifting issues" I looked the Sup. square in they eye and said "Well I would be more than happy to not have to work with her but you know as well as I do that I am not the one with the lifting issues." She just huffed at me and stomped away. He started laughing before she even left the room. I was soooo mad because all teh guys I work with know that I can lift just as good as they can so to have some old, washed up grandma who drives 30 mph down the highway while going lights and sirens crituiqe my lifting skills mucho pissed me off.< />Then there is a guy who has been in EMS for like 30 years and he can't lift anymore either. So me and my female partner got stuck with him one day and he was doing the macho "women shouldn't be in EMS" thing. I very diplomaticly pointed out that it takes alot of guts to say that women shouldn't be in EMS when he had to have two girls lift for him. < />He won't work with me anymore. muahhahaha

Yay Katie Beth! That's awesome. And the dude who couldn't be fired because of ADA issues, is bogus. First of all, if the person is not doing their job, even with reasonable accommodations, then they can be fired, just like anyone else. And if they are lying about vitals, that is unethical and has nothing to do with disability.
